ABOUT AZIZI GIBSON–
One of the most engaging and unique young voices in hip hop today, at 25; Azizi Gibson has a worldview that few rappers could ever hope to grasp. Born the child of a military family, Gibson’s journey took him from Germany to Africa to Thailand before settling on the in L.A. on the US’ west coast in 2011. The cross country move proved to be a game changer for the aspiring rapper, who soon found himself a part of Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label before reissuing his 2011 mix tape Phuck Deluxe in 2012.Working with producers from the preHISTORICcrew, Gibson released his first Brainfeeder mix tape, Ghost in the Shell in 2013. The title, homage to the popular anime and manga series, pinpoints exactly what it is that makes Gibson’s voice so unique. In a genre filled with hyperbole and delusions of grandeur, Gibson’s rhymes deliver a refreshing portrayal of reality, disguised by the veil of clever and comical lyricism. Working with some of the most interesting producers in the game like Southside and Komandi, Gibson has created a style and flow uniquely his own–smooth and familiar, yet startlingly fresh sounding. Parting ways with Brainfeeder, Gibson’s newest effort, A New Life, connects with the emcees roots, released on his crew’s preHISTORIC imprint. With the new album, featuring single like “DJ Khaled,” Gibson is poised for a takeover of the west coast rap scene, one fueled as much by Thai food and manga as the usual rap tropes like weed, money, and girls. Gibson’s tour in support of the LP begins May 2016 and finds him in places as far flung as St. Petersburg, Russia. Don’t miss the chance to see one of the hottest rising emcees before he ascends to the throne of alt-rap royalty.
